Exploring Forest Carbon: Management to Markets

November 4, 2026, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm | Shavers Creek Environmental Center, Hamer Classroom 3400 Discovery Rd, Petersburg, PA 16669

The Forest Owner Carbon and Climate Education Program is hosting a one-day, in-person workshop designed to give forest landowners a practical introduction to forest carbon and carbon markets.

The morning session will take place in the classroom, where participants will gain a foundational understanding of how carbon markets work, the key organizations and stakeholders involved, and how carbon credits are generated. Landowners will learn about important considerations in forest carbon contracts, including contract duration, management restrictions, leakage, and reversal risks. Experts will explain how forests store carbon and demonstrate how forest management decisions can influence carbon sequestration on private lands. The program will feature presentations from forest carbon specialists, along with opportunities for open discussion and questions with experts and stakeholders.

The afternoon session will move outdoors to the Shaver's Creek Environmental Center Forest for a hands-on field experience. During the field tour, participants will learn how forest carbon is measured in practice. Activities will include measuring tree diameter and height, exploring forest inventory techniques, and learning how these measurements are used in equations to estimate carbon storage. This interactive component will provide landowners with a firsthand understanding of the science behind forest carbon accounting and management.

What will you learn:
